Area Information

The area that would become Chattanooga was originally inhabited by Native Americans, who lived in the region continuously for thousands of years until the 19th century. The city became a major center of multiple battles during the American Civil War.

After the war, the city was transformed into a major railroad hub as well as an industrial and manufacturing center. After deteriorating somewhat in the 1980s, the culture of the city has since been revitalized. The downtown and riverfront areas have been updated and reborn to make the best use of the city's natural resources.

Average high temperatures in Chattanooga get up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average lows drop to 30 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 4.37 inches. Annual snowfall averages 4.2 inches.

More than 20 public schools and private schools provide education to area students. Higher education is offered by the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga, Tennessee Temple University and various specialized institutions.

Local medical needs are served by Kindred Hospital - Chattanooga, Erlanger Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Parkridge Medical Center and more.

Chattanooga's limits include frontage on Chickamauga Lake, Nickajack Lake and the Tennessee River. In the lakes you can fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie and catfish. Visit the river to try your hand at catching largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Chattanooga is not without opportunities to explore its culture and history. Our city is home to the Hunter Museum of Art, a well-known museum that rests on an 80-foot bluff overlooking the river and downtown. Other notable museums include the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Creative Discovery Museum, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and the Chattanooga African-American museum. If you're looking to enjoy an excellent musical performance, the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera can be found in the Tivoli Theatre.

The Riverbend Festival brings a variety of visitors to the city for a nine-day celebration of music and food. Other annual events include the River Roast barbecue celebration and the Southern Brewer's Festival for beer connoisseurs.
